Dream On. Chapter 13: Sneaking in.

Sneaking in

The insides of the cathedral were cold and ghostly, the only light in sight being from the candles at the altars. The ceiling was lost in the darkness, and their footsteps echoed all around making it look as if there were a hundred of them. Dalia led him to the main altar.
-I like coming here when there’s no one around. It makes me feel as if I were the last person on earth. – she murmured.
Robert felt all his skin raising in goosebumps, there was something that gave him the chills in that building. Maybe it was the light dancing on the faces of the painted idols that made them look alive, maybe it was the cold or maybe it was that smell, a mixture of incense, old stone, and humidity.
-How did you get the key to get in?- he asked her.
-That’s a secret, you’re still not allowed to know it.- she answered tilting her head.
Suddenly he felt a cold current of air behind him as if someone had opened a door. He turned around, but the only thing he could see were the thousands of flames from the candles, throwing flickering lights. It made him feel uneasy.
-I want to leave.- he sounded scared.
-C’mon, don’t be such a chicken! You should see something else.
She took him to a lateral and, through a flight of spiral stairs, to a balcony that opened all around the cathedral. From there he could almost see the shapes of the ceiling, and also most of the cathedral. Seeing it all so empty only made him feel more uncomfortable.
-Don’t you love it?-she told him, excited. –Imagine back then when people would come day and night to pray.
He still couldn’t understand what did she see in all of it. He liked loneliness, but that wasn’t loneliness that was just emptiness, a vast and unbearable emptiness.
-C’mon I want to leave.- he insisted.
-Shhh! There’s someone in here, can’t you hear it? Get down!- she said under her breath.
It was true, there was someone in the nave. First, they heard a pair of footsteps approaching the main altar, and then they could see, through the holes of the cravings, how someone knelt by the first bench as in prayer. After a few minutes, a man dressed in priest’s robes approached the kneeling person and told them something. The kneeling person arose and took off their coat, then they could see it was a middle-aged woman with thick brown hair that tumbled down her back.
-Any news?-asked the priest.
-She’s working on it, she really is.- replied the woman.
-Good, but tell her that we’re expecting some progress soon, she knows what’s at stake.
-I will tell her, father.
-Good, go in peace.- and he disappeared through a door at the right side of the church.
The woman stayed for a few more minutes staring at the altar as if looking for answers, and then she left. Dalia and Robert waited for at least half an hour before daring to move again. Once they were outside the cathedral Robert started breathing easily again.
-Have ever you seen these people before?- he asked trembling.
-No, it’s the first time.- Dalia admitted shaking her head.

An unexpected visit

-Hi, Myriam- replied Robert with a mocking smile.
-Cough, cough,… hi, Myriam!- said Albert whipping the beer from his face.
-Sorry I’ve startled you. Do you mind if I join in?- she asked.
-Sure, grab a seat.
Myriam took a chair from a nearby table, and left the guitar she was carrying standing against the wall.
-So, are you playing tonight?- Albert asked curiously.
-I’ve already played actually.- she said while tugging her hair behind her ears.
-Oh, no we missed you… wait, were you the girl who was just playing now?
She smiled and nodded shyly.
-You were fabulous! Everyone seemed to love you!
-Thank you, I’ve played in here for quite a bit now. I really like it, people was so supportive when I started playing, and now I just want them to enjoy with me, that's why they cheer so much, even if I'm not that great.- her face lit up when she talked about her music.
-You’re so brave, I don’t think I could ever do that. Besides, I’m a terrible singer.- admitted Albert.
-I don’t believe you! You’ve got a really rich voice!- Myriam said.- I’m serious, I can teach you how to control it whenever you want!- she added after seeing the look of disbelief on his face.
-Would you? That would be awesome!
Robert stared in incredulity from the other side of the table. Dalia tugged his arm.
-C’mon, let’s leave them alone.- she whispered. –Guys, I’m really tired, we’re leaving. Robert is taking me home.
-But we’ve just arrived!- complained Albert.- Stay a bit longer.
-No, you stay, I’m really tired, I’m serious.- she insisted.
-Well, ok, see you tomorrow, then.
Dalia took Robert by the arm and led him outside.
-So, what now?- asked him.
-Hmmm it’s way too early to go back… Wanna see my secret spot?
She started walking towards a narrow street by the cathedral. She approached a side door, and signed Robert to be quiet. Then she took out a key of her purse and opened the door.
-How the…-started Robert.
-Shh, get in.- whispered Dalia.

Dream On. Chapter 11: The center of the city.

Previously...

The center of the city

It was the first time the guys went to the center of the city. Their main reasons for not going were that they had been too busy and that it was far away, so actually it all came down to laziness. Albert knew that the city had a long and troubled history and had tried to convince his friend to visit it repeatedly, but in the end, they always found something else to do. Seeing it for the first time, he regretted not having insisted more.
Dalia had taken them to the old quarter inside the walls, with its twisty narrow stone streets, and the old red-brick houses. Then up the hill to the castle where they could see the whole city on both sides of the river. She was an excellent tourist guide, taking them to the most hidden spots and the most beautiful views, it was surprising to know that she had been in the city for only a bit longer that they had been. The tour ended at the cathedral’s square.
The temple was an enormous gothic building that loomed over all the surrounding constructions. It was grey and spiky, and even a bit scary after the sunset with its towers piercing the sky above. The square in front was made up of grey and black stone, radiating in beams from the center where there was a statue of a forgotten queen. As strange as it might seem, no one actually knew who was she supposed to be and the statue’s factions had been worn out so badly that it didn’t have a face anymore, it remained a mystery for everyone, but no one had ever considered taking it down.
The bar, they went to, was on the left side of the cathedral, just in front of the statue. It wasn’t too big, and it was full of people, but they still managed to find a small table on a corner where they could squeeze in. They ordered three beers, and listened to the girl who was playing the guitar half hidden behind a column, she should have been a regular at the bar because lots of people clapped and cheered when she finished.
- So, Albert, what have you been up to lately? I haven’t seen you much.- asked Dalia.
-I’ve been busy, too much work you know? I’m really looking forward the Christmas holidays… What about you?
-Not bad, Robert has been helping me a lot understand some of the harder things they teach us.
-Hmmm, that would explain why he’s been avoiding me lately.- Albert joked.
-Don’t be stupid.- Robert said whilst punching him on the arm. –Look here come the beers!
-Ok, let’s cheer… for Christmas holidays that are only two weeks away!- said Albert.
-For Christmas!- replied his friends, and then they all took a sip.
-Hi, guys!- a voice said from behind Albert making him choke on his beer. Snorting it out of his nose, he spun around.

Dream On. Chapter 10: Avoidance.

Previously...

Avoidance

Albert was exhausted of having to hide around the campus, he had been avoiding Marla for more than a month and he was really eager to go on Christmas holidays, which would give him some time to rest. He had lost count on how many times he had slipped into the men’s bathroom when he saw Marla coming. He had started entering the lecture room just seconds before the professors and sitting in the first row, he would also get out of the class as soon as it was over. He didn’t want to give her the opportunity to talk to him, even if it was with more people around. At that moment, he was glad that his dorm building had a strict “no-girls” policy, even if it was for other reasons since it meant that he didn’t feel hunted in there. He was lying on his bed when Robert got in the room.
-Hey, how are you doing?- he asked.
-Tired…-Albert replied languidly.
-Have you heard about your grandmother already?
Albert sat up.
-No, she just won’t pick up the phone for anyone, my mom tried to reach her a thousand times, but she won’t reply, and apparently she is never home, either. This is just too weird.- he was exasperated.
His friend looked at him, understanding. Then he sat on his bed looking at Albert.
-Well, I have some good news for you. Marla is apparently going out of town for a week.
-Are you sure? How do you know?- Albert looked relieved.
-The whole campus knows! She’s going to film an advertisement or something, Dalia told me.
-Great! I need some relax after so much tension!
Robert smiled. He was glad to see his friend relaxed for a change.
-Do you want to go out for a drink tomorrow night? Dalia told me about this place in the center, next to the cathedral, where there’s live music.
-Sure, why not? But… won’t I be a bit of a third-wheel?
Robert blushed to the roots of his hair.
-What do you mean?
-C’mon, man! I know that you like her, don’t you?- he said teasingly.
-Me? No!- he said getting even redder.
-Don’t lie to me! I’ve seen the way you look at her, and how you act when she’s around, you’re always checking out where she is and what she’s doing. You always wait for her to go for lunch.
-Well, yes, maybe I like her a bit, but I don’t think she does like me.- he said lowering his head.
-Man, you’ve to fight for her! Show her that you like her, tell her!
-It’s not so easy! You know I’m awkward and shy and I don’t know how to talk about feelings,…
-One step at a time then. And you’ll start tomorrow.
