Dream On. Chapter 14: That feeling of knowing someone

Previously...

That feeling of knowing someone

Myriam and Albert, in the meantime, had been talking at the bar, about everything and about nothing in particular. They laughed, they drank, and Albert even got Myriam to play again so he could see her play. They got so trapped into the conversation, that they didn’t even realize it was time to close the bar until a bartender approached them to ask them to leave.
-Wow! It is really late.-admitted Myriam glancing at her watch.- We should get going, don’t you think?
-Sure, remember to pick your guitar, though!- Albert reminded her.
They got outside into the chill of the night. Everything was glistening from the night’s dew, it looked almost brand new. They stopped to contemplate it in silence.
-You know?- started Myriam.- I feel as if I had known you for a long time, but I can’t think where could I have met you.
Albert smiled.
-The same happens to me, it was actually the first thing I told Robert when he introduced us. Is as if you were part of a piece of my life that I can’t remember.
They fell into silence again as they walked through the streets. They passed under the old city gates into the modern part of the city.
-It might sound crazy to you… but do you fancy walking back to the campus? I hate buses.- said Myriam.
-Hmmm, well, why not? But only if you’re not going to be cold.- worried Albert.
-I promise I won’t be.- smiled Myriam.
That part of the city was full of lights: the neon lights of the advertisements, the cold-blue lights of the office buildings, the green, orange and red of the traffic lights, the shiny colored lights of the first Christmas ornaments. It all looked artificial and uncanny. However, having Myriam by his side made Albert look at everything through a different filter. They walked down the main avenue until the buildings started to grow sparse, and the fields and the forests started to gain terrain. They could already make out the lights of the campus by then, and the sun was starting to rise.
-It has been a long night.- pointed out Myriam.
-Certainly.
-Let’s wait for the sunrise, half an hour more won’t make any difference, will it?
Albert could only agree. He didn’t know what he would have given for that night to last forever, for that moment to last forever, her and him side by side seeing how the sky started to turn light blue and then orange, and finally seeing the sun rise as a ball of red fire. But it didn’t last forever, and they had to go back and get some sleep. It took them 20 more minutes to get from where they were standing to the campus. Albert walked Myriam to her dorm building.
-Thanks for everything.- said Myriam looking into his eyes.
-No, thank you.- he replied and then he kissed her.
She kissed him back, eagerly, her mouth tasted like sweet almonds and warm milk. But then she broke off.
-You shouldn’t have done this. And I shouldn’t have done it, either.- she ran off to the door of her dorm building.
-Myriam!- he called out in despair, but she was already inside the building and would not get out again.
