The Christmas holidays
Even if Albert had only been away for
three months, everyone wanted to spend as much time as possible with him. The
twins would wake him up early every day so he could take them to do something,
his mother would insist on taking him shopping for things he didn't need, Mayra
seemed to be happy by sharing meal times and listening to his stories, making
questions about university, and then there was his grandmother making sure he
was doing what she had told him.
Controlling his dreams had proven to be
much more difficult than he thought it would be. The first time he tried to
focus on something easy, but his mind kept wandering and he ended up thinking
of the most complicated thing of all: Myriam. And because of that he had
reminiscences of that other dream, mixed with all sorts of bizarre things and
memoirs. His grandmother scolded him the following day, he would never be able
to control anything if he was always so disperse. Fortunately, he was slowly
getting better, and after some days he could keep his focus on a single thing
for, at least, half his dream.
On Christmas day his half-brothers woke
him up earlier than usual jumping on his bed.
-It's Christmas! It's Christmas! It's
Christmas!- they kept shouting until they threw him out of the bed.
-You didn't need to do that!- he said
while massaging his back.
-But you wouldn't wake up.- said Mark.
-And mum said we wouldn't be able to
open the presents until you woke up.- replied Michael.
-Ok, ok, let's go.
They went downstairs where the whole
family was waiting next to the Christmas tree. There was a pile of presents,
Albert recognized the ones he had bought himself, but he saw that there were
many more.
-C'mon mum! Albert's here already! We
want to open the presents now!- the twins were saying at the unison.
-Ok, start now.- Asha responded giving
them permission.
They started tearing the paper apart of
their presents while the whole family watched. Even if they were twins they had
completely different interests, they both loved sports, but Mark was more keen
on rugby while Michael preferred basketball, so half of their presents were
related to it, the other half were either video games or clothes, and they also
received one book from Lara, she was known to give books as presents all the
time. When the twins were done the rest of the family started unwrapping their
presents. Albert received an enormous amount of winter gear because his family
was afraid he would be too cold at the university. His last present was thick
and heavy, it had Lara's writing on the wrapping paper, so he knew it would be
a book. He started opening it, and saw that it was leather bound and old, but
only when he had finished unwrapping it he saw what it was. “The Dream
Wizards”. He felt his legs failing and had to sit down.
-Al, honey, are you ok, you look pale.-
said his mother worried.
-I'm just hungry, I need to have
breakfast.
-I think we all need to have
breakfast.- acknowledged John.- Who's ready for the special Christmas
breakfast?
-YEEEEEEEEES!!- the boys cried in
excitement and ran to the kitchen.
John and Asha followed them, but Mayra
stayed with her brother.
-Are you sure, you're ok?- asked her.
-Yes, it's only I need to eat.
-No, it's not. You were ok before
opening grandma's present.- she insisted.
Albert sighed resigned.
-Ok, dress up after breakfast, and I'll
tell you.- he said standing up and joining the rest of the family at the table.
