Dream On. Chapter 31: The awakening.

The awakening

Albert had gone to sleep thinking about Myriam, he knew he had to focus on something simple, but he couldn't. They had been spending lots of time together these couple of days since the picnic, and his feelings for her were increasing minute by minute. Then she had told him to met her the following day, and that's why he couldn't stop thinking about her.
He didn't even realize and he was already asleep, and after not too long he started dreaming. He knew he was dreaming, but everything felt tangible and bright as in real life. Also, he didn't feel his body, it was as if he were some kind of presence that wandered around. And finally, he was in Myriam's room. He had never been there, but he knew it was her room. As she had been longer in the university she was not sharing her room anymore, it was a tidy room with lots of books, the floor was clean and all the clothes were folded in its place. And Myriam was sleeping in her bed, her cheeks rosy, her brown hair spread over the pillow, her left hand clutching the sheets. Albert thought that he had never seen something half as beautiful. He watched her sleep for a while, it was relaxing to hear her breathe peacefully and he became bewitched by it. He could even feel how his breathing coordinated with hers. But there was something more that was asking for his attention.
On Myriam's desk, there was something wrapped in colored paper. It was rectangular and it didn't give many clues on what was inside it. On the paper, there was his name, in Myriam's writing. He stared at it for a long time, wondering whether he should open it or not. In the end, he decided that even if it was for him, Myriam might want to be there to see him open it, so he refrained to do so. However, he wanted some proof that what he was seeing was real, so he took one of Myriam's markers and draw a small line in a part of the paper. If tomorrow he was going to get the present, he would know if what he had been dreaming happened in true life.
He woke up the next day feeling both excited and confused. Had that all been real? He then saw a book lying on the top of his desk. He had completely forgotten about it, and he had been supposed to read it, but between the exams and that crazy sleepless period he had completely forgotten to. He took it and brought it to the bed so he could read it more comfortably. He opened a page at random but found exactly what he was looking for. “The Awakening” it read. It seemed strange to him that a book about Dreamers, had a chapter talking about awakenings, but when he started reading he saw it was logic. According to the book, all dreamers had two awakenings, the first one was a dream that looked real, although it never was, but it had some specific characteristics and, sometimes, it had a prophetic meaning. The second awakening was when the dreamer was finally able to get into the real world during a dream. Some dreamers only achieved this phase late in their lives, but the most powerful ones, apparently, went through the second awakening just after starting their adulthoods. However, none of the known dreamers had developed his powers before their twenties.
Reading all that made Albert feel uncomfortable, and even more confused. Did it mean that now he would be able to control what he dreamed whenever he wanted to? And that thing about the prophetic dreams, did it mean that his sister would fall off a cliff? He would have to read the book more calmly, he knew, if he wanted to get answers to all his questions. However, that would have to wait, he needed to hurry up or he would be late to his date with Myriam.
He ended up arriving late anyway because sometimes he was a bit too confident on his scheduling capacity and about his speed on getting things done. Myriam was waiting for him, visibly nervous. He smiled at her and apologized for being late. She took him at the forest clearing they had gone some time ago. The same place where she had told him that she liked him, but that he had to wait. It looked full of life now after all the snow had melted and the grass started to regrow. Myriam asked him to sit down, as she herself sat.
-You know why we are here.- she said looking at the trees that surrounded them.
-I think so.- he replied.
-I broke up with my boyfriend, just after Christmas, but I wanted to be sure about this before telling you anything. Also... I owe you something.
She produced a wrapped gift from her bag. Albert recognized it, it was the same that he had seen that very same night. He looked for the marking he had left and there it was, it made him both happy and scared, was he prepared for that power?
-C'mon open it!- Myriam hurried him.
He unwrapped the paper, inside there was a woolen scarf knitted in blue and black strips. Myriam smiled.
-I knitted it myself, that's why it took me this long to give it to you. I know maybe now it's not the right weather, but I couldn't wait until next winter.
-I love it.- Albert replied.- And I love you.- he said kissing her.
