Dream On. Chapter 37: The comeback.

Previously...

The comeback

Marla had been away from the university for a whole month, it had been so long that people no longer asked where she was. So when she came back, thinner and paler than ever, dressed all in red, covering her face with a pair of sunglasses, and wearing a large hat, it was a huge surprise and it caused some turbulence around the campus. She looked changed. Before that, she acted as if she were above everyone else, then everyone could feel that she was above all of them. It was as if she had been born with it. She had become a despot, but if you looked really hard, you could see that she was sad, and there was something in her eyes that made you realize that she had lost any kind of hope that she could have held.
The same day Marla came back Dalia approached her when she found her walking around the campus alone. It was strange that Marla was alone, before the change she used to have a flutter of admirers around her day and night.
-Marla.- she called out, however her friend paid no heed.- Marla!- she shouted again.
Marla stopped her walk and lowered her sunglasses as to look to her. Dalia thought that she felt as if melting water were running down her spine. Had her friend always looked so scary?
-What do you want?- asked her coldly.
-Are you okay?
Marla looked at her from head to toes before putting her sunglasses on again.
-I've never been better.
And then she left again. Dalia felt that she needed to run behind her for a fraction of a second, then another thought crossed her mind. She didn't want to have a part on all that anymore. She needed to come clean to her friends and go back to her town. If she was meant to go to university she would find another way. If she didn't she would stick to her fate, but she needed to be as far as whatever was happening in here as soon as possible.
She went to her dorm and started packing frantically, throwing all her stuff into her luggage without any order. Her roommate looked at her surprised but she didn't say anything, they didn't really get along too well. When she was in the middle of the preparations for the escape she heard something that left her frozen.
-Get out.- she heard Marla tell her roommate.
Dalia turned around slowly and saw how she entered the room closing the door with a foot, fitted inside a red shoe, as she got in. Marla approached her slowly, walking as smoothly as a cat. She grasped Dalia's left hand and held it tight, then she took her by the throat gently but firmly. She wasn't wearing neither her sunglasses nor her hat, and Dalia could see that her skin was much more tense and white than it used to be. Marla approached her face to her friend's.
-Listen closely- she said looking into her eyes.- I know everything you do and everything you think. If you think you can fool me, think again. If you leave I'm going to chase you, and you will regret it because I'll burn your whole town down if I need to. You're going to keep working for me and you're going to keep sticking with your little friends. Understood?- as she spoke she had tightened her grasp on Dalia's neck and she had trouble breathing already.
-Y... Yes.- she got to say under her breath.
-Good. I will contact you whenever I have need of you. When I call you I need you to be available at that same moment, I don't care about what you are doing, if you are sleeping, if you are eating, if you are at class or if you are finally fucking that straw man that you seem to like so much. I want you to be available to me at any moment.- then she let her go.- Now unpack all this mess and be a good girl.
Dalia fell on her knees and reached for her neck massaging it, she didn't even see how Marla left her room. She started crying lying on the floor, cursing once more the day she agreed to the pact.
