Dream On. Chapter 54: Starting.

Previously...

Starting

Albert went to sleep wondering if he would be strong enough to do what he intended to do. He was scared of screwing up leading to things to escalate faster than he had pretended. He tried to calm himself down and focused on something simple. He started counting and breathing at the same rhythm. When his heart stopped racing he focused on his objective.
He found himself on a street in the city. Marla's building was in front of him, he checked the time on a pharmacy clock, he didn't want to risk finding Marla awake.  It was only eleven, he would rather wait a bit more. He approached the building wondering whether she would have set up any kind of special measures. He would have, but again, Marla was overconfident about her powers, not that she didn't have a reason to, but that could be her weak point.
He waited half an hour and then sneaked into the building, it wasn't too difficult, after all, while dreaming, he could do whatever he wanted, so he plainly crossed a wall as if it were not there. He found himself in the main hall, facing the elevators. He stopped, considering if he should take them or not, but he finally decided against it, something in his gut told him not to. The stairs started at the left side of the elevators and were lit only by the emergency lights. They were creepy and, Albert guessed that little used, but they made him feel safe. When he was less than half way through he was glad that he didn't actually have to climb them, if he had been awake he would have cursed himself for sure. Of course, he could have just go through the floors, but this made him win some time to make sure Marla were asleep. Being so cautious made him feel a bit stupid, but knowing what she was able to do made him reconsider it and think that maybe he was not being cautious enough.
He finally arrived at the top floor and climbed the black and white staircase. For the first time he stopped to wonder why did it have those colors, it created a striking illusion of the top of the stairs being wider that the foot of the same, that was true but other than that it made no sense. He went up the last flight of stairs carefully, he was relying on the dense vegetation to help him approach in a more secure manner, so when he arrived at the top and found that all the vegetation was gone he almost had a panic attack. He returned to the stairs and reevaluated the situation from there.
-Albert, calm down.- he told himself.- Remember that you can do whatever you want, it is your dream. Why do you have powers, idiot?
He was invisible after all so he would only need to be careful with any kind of alarms that could be around the house. Actually, he could deactivate them just by thinking of it, but what if they were wired to a second alarm system? He was hating that all the doubts were springing now that he was already in action. No tampering with the alarms then, he decided, he actually only needed to see how to avoid them, so he made that the areas covered by the alarms would be marked in red. As soon as he had done it he realized that he didn't have a body inside his dream, so he had lost time over nothing.
As he approached the house he started feeling more confident. He realized that it was not only the garden what had changed but also the house. He had to admit that he liked it better. However, this meant that there would probably be some changes inside the house that would slow his mission. Therefore, he decided to get inside it directly from a window, and since he was going to Marla's bedroom he'd better go to her window.
Marla was sleeping in her bed, the bedroom hadn't changed a bit, it was exactly as he remembered it. He stood there for a while, just to make sure that she was still fast asleep. He got himself closer to the bed and put himself at the same level as Marla's head. He twitched his voice to make it deeper and started to talk to Marla mentally.
-Marla, are you proud of what you are doing? I am surprised you can sleep at night. Killing innocent people just for the sake of it, Marla? I thought you were better than that.
He spent around five minutes trying to shame her in her sleep, he saw that she started moving as if trying to get the voices outside her head. Then she started speaking feebly, in her dreams. Albert was startled, he wasn't expecting that.
-Dad, I'm sorry, mom made me do it. I didn't want to, but the Priest gave me a nice house and everything I wanted because they said I was special. And then mom wouldn't allow me to see you, it was only people talking about how powerful I was and how many things I could have. They changed me, I have more power now because I am the Creator. But I don't want to be the Creator, I want to be with you dad. All this power... it takes control of me, it makes me do things that I would have never done. Dad, please save me.
Albert put some distance between the bed and himself and waited a bit to see if she kept talking or not. When he saw that she just kept tossing herself from one side of the bed to the other while still asleep, he decided to leave. That time, however, he decided to take a more direct route, and jump to the street. He didn't dare waking up until he had walked some streets away from the building. What did all of that mean? Maybe Marla wasn't actually what she looked like?
